Apostleship of the Sea

The Apostleship of the Sea works for the spiritual and social welfare of all seafarers. The AOS is extremely active in the north-east England, and especially in our Diocese, with a presence in all the ports in the NE region.
In each of the following ports a dedicated and fully trained and equipped group of volunteers visit ships to provide support for visiting seafarers:
- Berwick upon Tweed
- Port of Blyth
- Port of Tyne
- Sunderland
- Seaham
- Hartlepool
- North Tees
The Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) has a network of Chaplains both Lay and Ordained working in ports throughout England and Wales, and recently merged with AOS Scotland with the aim of developing the current style of ministry in ports there. Estimates suggest that 60% of seafarers are Catholic or come from Catholic countries.
The AOS exists to help the seafarer sustain and nourish his faith whilst he is away from home and family for long periods. It is noteworthy that 95% of all trade still travels by sea so we all rely on seafarers for much of the food we eat, the clothes we wear and for other consumables. The Apostleship of the Sea is an agency of the Bishops' Conference in England and Wales, and an agency of the Conference of Bishops in Scotland. All of us share in the work of the AOS through the annual collection on Sea Sunday in July.
