Cardinal Hume Lecture 2009

 

Cardinal CormacThe Cardinal Hume lectures were started at St Mary's Cathedral in memory of Cardinal Hume, Archbishop of Westminster 1976 -1999, and who was born in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The first lecture was in 2002, the same year the commemorative Statue and Garden were opened at St Mary's Cathedral. Previous lecture topics included:

Tradition and Authority – (Professor Eamon Duffy 2003)

Basil Hume the Monk Cardinal – (Anthony Howard 2004)

Cardinal Hume and the Reconversion of England – (Anne Widdicombe 2005)

 

The 17th of June this year was the tenth anniversary of the death of Cardinal Hume. To mark this, the fifth Cardinal Hume Lecture entitled George Basil Hume: A Monastic Archbishop was given by His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor.

The Cardinal Hume Statue and Garden were opened in Newcastle by St Mary's Cathedral in 2002, the same year as the first Cardinal Hume lecture:
