foundation and history

Sisters at prayer

The congregation was founded by Caroline Lenferna de Laresles, who was born on the island of Mauritius in 1824. She was baptised at the age of 11, and on the eve of her First Communion she felt drawn to say: I shall be a Sister of Charity , although what this meant she did not fully understand, but her desire was to serve the poor and allow them to experience God’s love in reality.  After 15 years of discernment and soul searching Caroline entered with the Sisters of Loreto to be formed by them and then to leave in 1850 to become not only a Sister of Charity, but, under the auspices of the Bishop, the Foundress of the future Congregation dedicated to Our Lady of Good Succour. She wished her sisters to be at the service of the local church in the midst of the universal church.  They now serve in 14 countries.

Work of the Order in this diocese

Serving the elderly
The sisters from the community in Ebchester serving the elderly

The mission in England opened in 1934.  The community at Ebchester began with a school, but at the present moment the sisters devote themselves to the care of the elderly with the help of lay carers.  The sisters want to be instrumental in coming to the aid of those who are suffering emotionally and spiritually, so they also visit the elderly in their homes, also the sick and housebound.  They are in an area where the different denominations of faith are visible, and try to be in union with them, sharing the Word of God together.  Aside from that there are sisters who come from abroad to help them in their work.  Community life is helped and nurtured by our prayer life, apostolate and daily Eucharist.
