The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God is an international religious order providing health and social care services to sick, vulnerable and disadvantaged people in 52 countries throughout the world, working in collaboration with 45,000 co-workers and health professionals.
The legacy of its founder, Saint John of God (1495 -1550) is a mission of hospitality and compassion that has continued and grown over five centuries.Today, many hundreds of services impact daily on the lives of several million people.

The Brothers of Saint John of God started their mission of hospitality in England in 1880 in Scorton, North Yorkshire where they developed a hospital serving many needs within the local community. Over the years this developed to serve as a general hospital and in time a nursing home for elderly people and those suffering with dementia. In 1930 the Brothers extended their mission to Hertfordshire caring for people with learning disabilities and in 1948 opened a hospital for people with physical disabilities in Hurworth, Darlington.

In the 1980s care within institutions was superseded by ‘care in the community’ and care for people in their own homes, within residential and supported living services.Responding to the needs of the day, the Order, through its foundation charity, Saint John of God Hospitaller Services, currently provides a range of diverse services to meet the needs of people with learning and physical disabilities, people with mental health issues, people who have difficulties with substance misuse, people who are homeless and elderly Religious.
