Prayer Walks around the Diocese – Herrington Country Park

Kathryn Turner writes:

Herrington Country Park is located on Chester Road, Penshaw (A183) and very close to the church of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Penshaw.

There are regular bus services that stop at the Park. Try buses, 77, 78, 78A from Park Lane Interchange. Alternatively, plan your journey with Go North East.

Herrington Country Park can be found on Google maps.

Cast in the shadow of Penshaw monument, Herrington Country Park was once the site of Herrington Colliery, which closed in 1985. By that time the colliery waste heap was the largest in the North East with approximately 11,000,000 cubic metres of shale, which blighted the lives of the local communities. It has since been reclaimed and developed.

There are cycle routes, boating lake, cycle/skate park, a large amphitheatre created from graded grassed embankments and numerous sculptures/art works set out around the park.

The walk begins at the boating lake car park and is approximately 1 mile on good paths and should take about 45 minutes.
